The harbour, established in the 16th century, is a haven for yachts and small pleasure craft while the surrounding bay is popular with windsurfers and bathers. The town also attracts visiting golfers to its two golf courses.

Elie has many interesting historic buildings, some of which date back to the 17th century, including The Lady's Tower, built for Lady Janet Anstruther in the late 18th century east of Elie bay as a summer house, with a changing room to allow her to bathe in a pool in the rocks below.

Elie Harbour beach is one of many excellent beaches in this town. It lies north of the harbour and close to many facilities. It links with the adjacent Earlsferry beach, giving almost a mile of uninterrupted sand.

Elie Ruby Bay is a beautiful sheltered bay which takes it’s name from the garnet or red gemstones which still wash up here. Both beaches have been awarded the Seaside Award for clean water.

There is an active sailing club, and a watersports facility where equipment can be hired and adventure trips on inflatables can be enjoyed.

There are a number of good cafes and bars in the area serving food throughout the day.
